フィラデルフィア美術館のインスタグラム(philamuseum) - 6月7日 03時41分

Thomas Rowlandson often relied on the comedy of opposites, especially mismatched couples. The ill-fated lovebirds in this print don’t have much hope. Dropsy was a condition that induced painful swelling, while consumption (another name for tuberculosis) caused its victims to become thin and frail. Rowlandson not only exaggerates the couple’s differences, but also adds to the absurdity of their situation by placing them in front of a Hercules statue, whose physically ideal form looms in the distance. Discuss this piece in depth at our next Spotlight Gallery Conversation on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
