In the world of the North Pacific rocky reef the sunflower sea star is the equivalent of the lion on the African savanna or the wolf on the Arctic tundra. Instead of hunting gazelles or elk, one of the world’s largest sea stars (3 feet wide) stalks marine grazers like abalone and sea urchins. Armed with 24 arms lined with over 15,000 tube feet, this formidable predator can reach speeds up to 4 feet per minute, which is super fast for a sea star.
