#NYTLoveCity | Maher el-Rowmeim’s wife, Ghadeer al-Howthi, lives in Jordan. In the 5 years of their marriage, 10 months is the longest they’ve lived in the same place together. Current immigration policy keeps her from joining him in Queens. Maher, a 31-year-old biomedical technician, works marathon days at hospitals all over the 5 boroughs of NYC. In the evenings he rarely returns home much before 8, long after Ghadeer, 25, has gone to sleep in her spare, temporary apartment 7 time zones in the future. She is from Sanaa, Yemen’s capital, which Maher’s family left when he was a small boy, but she lives for the time being in Amman; she fled the war to study dentistry in Jordan, with the idea that the end of her training would coincide with a visa allowing her to move to New York. On May 19, the third day of Ramadan, Maher hurried to open his Imo app for a video chat. (@dannasinger took this photo that evening while on assignment for @nytmag.) When the couple speaks, they go in circles trying to come up with some new strategy, but they know that the fate of their marriage is at the mercy of a Supreme Court decision that legal observers expect to go against them. And so, their future uncertain, they take refuge in the past. Visit the link in our profile to read their story.
