Andy Warhol’s ‘Vesuvius,’ created in 1985, is one of only a handful of works by the artist to pay tribute to the iconic Neapolitan volcano. This boldly coloured painting, which has resided in the same collection for over 30 years, captures both the natural beauty and the looming threat of danger from the volcano, a subject which has been explored by a long line of artists. Warhol painted the canvas by hand, using bright Pop art colours, so as to give the impression of having been executed just one minute after eruption. The theme of death tragedy is one that is explored frequently throughout Warhol’s oeuvre and is exemplified with his powerful depiction of ‘Vesuvius.’ On view now at our #London galleries ahead of our Contemporary Art Evening Auction on 26 June. #SothebysContemporary #AndyWarhol #Vesuvius
