This framed #mallrats poster isn’t like the rest: this is the original @drewstruzanart painting from which the poster was struck (when you look closely, you can even see the brush strokes). How this poster came to be: there was a slapdash poster stab along the lines of the cover art for the VHS release. @samosier & I were in our early 20’s, so all we cared about was having a cool poster for our office walls. So we asked the @universalpictures folks “Can we get #drewstruzan to do our poster? He’s the guy who did the posters for Blade Runner and Raiders of the Lost Ark and Back to the Future.” When they asked what we were looking for, I drew the crudest version of this poster to communicate body positions. Scott did a cleanup pass on my sketch and the studio sent it to the legendary artist. I nearly passed out when I laid eyes on this iconic tableau at completion. Years later, I learned that the original artwork was for sale. The price: $30k. Now I come from a lower, lower, lower middle class income family - so I know the value of a buck and never spend money that wildly. Making #clerks only cost me $27,575 - so I couldn’t justify spending $30k on artwork, no matter how cool or meaningful. But ultimately, I made a deal with myself: so long as I didn’t get a new car for 10 years, I could give myself the Struzan painting. So since then, it’s hung proudly in my house, a constant reminder that I gotta get back to work and pay for this astounding piece of modern art. #KevinSmith #art #movieposter #90s
