#沖縄 では苛烈を極めた地上戦で二十万人もの尊い命が無残にも奪われました。今日の私たちの平和と繁栄は、沖縄の人々の、筆舌に尽くしがたい苦難と癒えることのない深い悲しみの上にある。そのことを深く噛み締めながら、戦争の惨禍を二度と繰り返さない。この決然たる誓いを貫いていくことを改めて御霊にお誓いしました。

Two hundred thousand precious lives were tragically lost in the extremely fierce ground battle in Okinawa. The peace and prosperity we now enjoy rests atop the hardship that is beyond description and the unrelenting deep sadness experienced by the people of Okinawa. Reflecting solemnly on this fact, I vowed once more to the souls of the fallen that we will carry out our resolute commitment never to repeat the horrors of war.
