This recently re-attributed portrait by Sir Peter Paul Rubens is one of only a few surviving paintings by the artist of his daughter, Clara Serena, who died aged just 12.⠀

Previously covered with a layer of green overpaint, the work was believed to be by a follower of Rubens. A subsequent transformative restoration has confirmed it as an autograph work by the master.⠀

As our Old Masters specialist Henry Pettifer points out, ‘The picture bears all the hallmarks of Rubens’s brushwork, his manner of execution and blending of flesh-tones.’⠀
