Here's a note I received from a supporter. RIP little Chance the cat. ?Your sad story will help save other kitties from this inhumane amputation procedure. Your mama is an awesome human. When she knew better, she did better. ❤️ .Dear City, We just lost Chance 3 weeks ago at the age of almost 19. It was and still is difficult for me to write about what I did to him. Almost 20 yrs ago, I didn’t question declawing since vets said it was OK. If only I had known then what I know now. There is absolutely no way any one of us knows how it is going to affect a cat until after the fact. We are essentially playing a game of chance with our beloved cats. Chance was declawed at about a yr old. He healed, but his paws bothered him his entire life. It grew worse as he aged. His toes eventually curled into his paws and he couldn't straighten them easily. Chance became grumpy and hated other cats. He would tolerate them but out of the blue he would attack them when they weren't doing anything. He also became a hard biter. In retrospect, I believe he was in constant discomfort that grew over time. As he got older, he sometimes would avoid the litter pan. All of his issues in my opinion can be directly connected to having him declawed. And all of his problems were subtle and changed as he aged, so it was easy to brush it off and think it was something else and had nothing to do with the declaw. It was only after the awareness of this barbaric act was brought to the forefront, that I could connect the dots. A light went on. I have since become an advocate for banning declawing. I told Chance many times throughout his life how sorry I was for what I did and I never have and never will do it again. The only way I can honor his memory is to keep pushing for the declaw ban.
