Today in 1970, chants of “Say it clear, say it loud. Gay is good, gay is proud” filled the streets of New York. “We stretched out as far as I could see, thousands of us,” recalled one participant.
Christopher Street Liberation Day was held on the one year anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, and today is often thought of as New York City’s first pride parade. Teen-aged activist Mark Segal helped organize the march and carried this collection can. Donations helped support the march. Segal would go on to have a long career as a civil rights activist and national LGBTQ leader.
