Unlike Botticelli’s iconic depiction of ‘The Birth of Venus’, standing on a scallop shell, this newborn Venus draws upon the Venetian tradition of reclining goddesses, as seen in works like Titian’s ‘Venus d’Urbino’.

The artist – believed to be Lo Spadarino – must also have been influenced by the ancient Roman sculpture ‘Sleeping Hermaphroditus’, now in the Louvre, which his Venus bears a fascinating resemblance to.

Attributed to Giovanni Antonio Galli, called Lo Spadarino (1585–1653), ‘The Birth of Venus’. Oil on canvas, 38 ⅞ x 53 in. (98.4 x 134.6 cm.) Estimate: £30,000–50,000.
