Thorny devils like this one photographed at the @melbournemuseum are quite unique lizards. They live in the sand plain and sand ridge deserts of central Australia. The thorny devil’s coloration matches that of its habitat, changing the shade of colors in response to its surroundings. And, speaking of specialized; they only eat four species of ants from one genus, of which they consume 2,000 per day! Living in a desert climate can be rough, especially when water is scarce, so the thorny devil obtains most of their water through condensation of dew that collects on their skin. Microstructures between the scales act as channels directing the water droplets through capillary action to their mouth. These lizards also grow a spiny protrusion off their necks that acts as a “false head” to avoid predators. When a predatory bird swoops down to attack, they will quickly tuck their real head down to present the “false head”, which will pop off, allowing the lizard to get away. It'll never grow back, but at least it gives the reptile a second chance at life. #photoark #lizard #wildlife #thornydevil Check out @Joel Sartore to see the false “head” of this bizarre lizard.
