In 1738, pugs gained particular significance in Europe, after the Pope decreed that Roman Catholics were forbidden from belonging to Masonic orders.

Many Catholics then formed their own quasi-masonic lodges and took as their symbol the pug dog. In these orders of ‘Möpsen’ (German for pugs), the initiates carried model pugs, similar to this one, to their lodge meetings.
