Norbert Goeneutte was only 25 years old when he painted this intimate portrait of a mother and her child.

Although Goeneutte never exhibited with the Impressionists, he married one of Manet's models and often sat for Renoir. The critic and journalist, Antonin Proust, recalled: ‘Manet once told me; you should get to know Norbert, he is an artist.’
