Photo @tbfrost | Words @paulrosolie | Black-skinned parrot snakes are fast moving and mildly venomous. Their spectacular camouflage means you seldom see one in the complex Amazonian foliage. But when one found its way into the bathrooms of my research station, it didn’t blend in much at all. By the time I got there a woman had begun screaming and other people had come to see what the commotion was about. The parrot snake was trapped in the corner of the bathroom where it tried valiantly to look dangerous: mouth agape, ribs flared, and heaving. Although the humans were scared, the snake was clearly terrified. Imagine being this snake, so slender and delicate as to be no match for a bird’s beak - even a child’s step could crush you. When I reached the bathroom, I lifted the frightened snake and cupped it in my hands to shelter it from the chaos. But as I walked it back towards the jungle I could feel the snake calming. When I opened my hands, I was lost in a moment of wonder, not only for the stark beauty of the green scales against bland human skin – but at the realization that this little being knew that it was safe.
To see what this snake looks in defense mode, with its mouth wide open, head on over to @tbfrost
