The day the songwriter @teddygeiger came out publicly as transgender was the same day she shared the news with @ショーン・メンデス, who’s been her closest A-list collaborator. “She let it out, and she was just so happy — I can’t even describe it,” Shawn said. For Teddy, 29, this new chapter as perhaps the most prominent producer and songwriter in #pop who also happens to be a trans woman is coinciding with the richest moment in her career. Shawn’s self-titled album featured 11 songs written and produced in part by Teddy and debuted at No. 1 on the @Billboard chart. @ジャスティン・トランター, a fellow pop songwriter, called Teddy a “musician’s musician” — one whose coming out helps to shift the landscape for queer creators. Once a rising pop star herself, Teddy turned away from the spotlight around 21, retreating to studios where she honed her skills in writing and production. But even as her songwriting began to find new audiences, Teddy was plagued by intense anxiety. Last September, she entered a monthlong treatment program to address her anxiety and, as she put it, “get to the bottom of the gender thing.” After that, Teddy threw away her men’s clothing and started wearing makeup. “I just feel more open,” Teddy said. “Because I’m willing to talk about everything now, people are then more open with me.” @ryanpfluger took this portrait of #TeddyGeiger.
