This sublime architectural marvel, Grundtvig’s Church, is located in the Bispebjerg district of Copenhagen, Denmark. It is a rare example of expressionist church architecture, built in honour of the influential 19th century Danish philosopher, historian, minister, poet and reformer N.F.S. Grundtvig. The superior might of the church’s eye-watering construction was the combined effort of three generations of Danish architects and designers from a single family. Initiated by Peder Vilhelm Jensen-Klint, construction began in 1921, but after his death in 1930 his son, famed architect and designer Kaare Klint, was entrusted with the task, and later, Kaare’s son, Esben Klint, joined the project. The church was finally completed in 1940. The design is meant to be a synthesis of numerous building styles, merging the scale of Gothic vertical architecture with geometric expressionism and traditional Danish vernacular. More than 6 million bricks form a serene, minimalist look, juxtaposed with a soaring facade that evokes the shape of a church organ.
