#SpeakingInDance | “It’s exceedingly fast,” the dancer @khfdance said of “Available Light” (1983), a collaboration among the choreographer #LucindaChilds, the composer #JohnAdams and the designer @frankgehry. “It’s searingly difficult, and you can’t hide anything technique-wise. But what I love is that it also goes back to Lucinda’s early Judson roots.” The Judson Dance Theater collective, born in the 1960s, celebrated everyday movement. “You have to move so economically that there’s no time for artifice,” Kate said about “Available Light,” part of the #MostlyMozart festival (July 12 and 13). “You’re just doing it.” The movement, Lucinda said, is tricky to perform alongside John’s score: “There’s no rhythmic structure. We had to fall back on the way the company used to work when we had no music — to find a collective pulse. It brings out something very beautiful, because they’re so connected.” And as rigid as it appears, there’s freedom. “I’m really ebullient sometimes,” Kate told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ writer @giadk. “I like to feel through it. I’ve found that other choreographers will say, ‘Be more this’ and that’s never the note from Lucinda. As long as you’re in time and space, you’re good.” @sbrackbill used #Super8film to make this video for our weekly series exploring the world of #dance.
