Cairo is the Broadway of belly dance. In recent decades, though, the centuries-old art form has inspired conflicting impulses among Egyptians. Some see as high art, others consider it racy entertainment. But the recent arrest of a Russian belly dancer, Ekaterina Andreeva, exposed simmering tensions in Cairo’s #bellydancing scene. Many Egyptians say foreigners are sullying an ancient art form. “We are technically good, but they have that Arab soul,” Ekaterina admitted. “Coming to Egypt was my dream,” said Alla Kushnir, who hails from Ukraine. The 33-year-old dreamed of being an archaeologist and graduated in law. But in 2010, she appeared on “Ukraine’s Got Talent” with an extravagant belly-dance routine that set her on a new career path. In recent years, foreigners like Alla and Ekaterina have dominated the top flights of Egypt’s belly-dancing scene, bringing an athletic, high-energy sensibility to the dance. But Egyptian dance still has one undisputed queen: Dina Talaat Sayed, who has danced for princes, presidents and dictators. “Love and hate — it’s always been like this,” she said. “Egyptians cannot have a wedding without a belly dancer. But if one of them marries your brother — oh, my God! That’s a problem.” @lauraboushnak took this photo of Ekaterina. Swipe left to see Alla and Dina performing.
