New Yorkers are desperate to get back to nature. And if that means #glamping at a $650-a-night campsite inside the city limits — well, it’s a start. “The views are fantastic,” said Damon Willmott, a Park Sloper who recently booked 2 tents for his family of 4 on Governors Island. The Willmotts go camping often, but driving outside the city adds a level of difficulty and stress. After the 8-minute ferry ride to their campsite, they simply plopped down their bags, turned off their phones and played a game of Scrabble. “It felt good to disconnect,” Damon said. Joining them at @collectiveretreats on #GovernorsIsland, where @rdegive took this photo, were scores of other campers in tents ranging in price from $220 to $650. ($75 tents are available on Tuesdays, and some tents go for as much as $850). Some were roasting marshmallows, some eating $120 prix fix meals. Thousands of lights in Lower Manhattan twinkled like constellations, and the glowing green Statue of Liberty waved goodbye as revelers raced for the last ferry home. Hard-core campers may scoff at glamping — “glamour camping” — and even glamping outfitters dislike the term. But most people agree getting back to nature, no matter how comfortable, is better than not going at all. What do you think? #?️
