In 1540 Spanish conquistadors led by Francisco Vásquez de Coronado made their way to the rim of the massive Grand Canyon as they were searching for a rumored city of gold. What they found was an incomprehensible landscape. Legend has it that their Hopi guides purposely misled them from finding access to the canyon floor.
