Sacred offering at the start of the Laotian New Year, a giving to the spirits that the Lao people believe resides in the Mekong River in Luang Prabang. That evening a few years ago, this very kind lady welcomed me to the river. She wrapped banana leaves into a floating offering, placed incense, small pieces of food and a candle, then prayed, sending her wish and hopes for the new year down the moving waters of Mekong. It was a moment of near silence. Barely a hint of wind. When the light in the sky fell dim behind the glow for the spirits of the water she was giving respect to.
