I’ve been a fan of Tom Petty since I first heard “Refugee” and “Don’t Do Me Like That” on the radio as a nine-year-old kid. Thanks to an introduction from his daughter Adria, I was lucky enough to work with Tom on several projects including updating his Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers “Flying V” logo, a few tour posters, and the packaging for his “Live Anthology.” Tom is a musical icon and was always fun to work with, so I was stunned and saddened when he passed away unexpectedly. Adria Petty reached out to me to illustrate a portrait of her dad for the cover of the "Tom Petty: An American Treasure” box set, and we both agreed that I should make my illustration based on a fantastic photo by Mark Seliger. I’m pleased with the result and honored to contribute to the legacy of a musician who has contributed so much fantastic music to my life and this world! - Shepard
On September 28, Reprise Records will release An American Treasure—a career-spanning Tom Petty box set. The 60-track set unveils dozens of previously unreleased recordings, alternate versions of classic songs, rarities, historic live performances and deep tracks that spotlight Tom’s remarkable depth and evolution as a revered and tremendously influential songwriter, recording artist and performer. An American Treasure marks the first release of Tom Petty music since the artist’s tragic passing in October 2017.
