Nothing says rebellion and royalty at the same time like Tartan does, which is why it speaks volumes on the nature of our British style heritage. British history in general. For centuries it’s meaning has been subverted and wrestled between opposing classes- it’s history is one of contradiction and juxtaposition.
Tartan originated in Scotland and was the fabric worn by crofters working the land. In the 19th century Tartan was romanticised by the elite and the establishment with each Tartan design representing a clan- a family line. In true style, Tartan was re-appropriated by the Punk movement in the second half of the 70’s. The Royal Stewart of our first post this morning was worn only by the Queen before the Punks took it for themselves. In fact, all subcultures understood that juxtaposition was the vital and necessary move to expose contradictions, to subvert. It now simultaneously signifies quaint biscuit tins and the fervent Sex Pistols. They both signify British culture, and have been reduced down to the same paradigm.
Tartan is the contested amalgam of civility and disobedience. Tradition and Revolution. Order and Chaos. Obedience and Disobedience. Punk vs Royal.

Tartan remains a vital but contested component of rebellious style.
