Photo by @jessicasamplegram // Lagoa do Fogo is one of several crater lakes on the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores formed after a volcanic eruption in 1563. When we drove up to the peak we were completely enveloped in fog and were thinking we should take a quick look and keep going. But once at the top you could see the clouds moving right through you and if you waited only just a few minutes the sun would break through revealing this lake like a sunny oasis in a sea of mist. Truly one of the most spectacular hikes I have done. And the cherry on top is that there are natural thermal hot springs only a few minutes down the road at Caldeira Velha. #azores #portugal
