These women walked 4 miles to vote in Zimbabwe — and they weren’t alone. Huge numbers of Zimbabweans turned out yesterday for the first elections since the fall of the longtime ruler Robert Mugabe, in voting that was largely peaceful. Our video journalist @kassiebracken is on the ground in #Zimbabwe, where she met 94-year-old Annie Munyoro, left, and her friends Cortia Chabikwa, 79, and Nyarai Makuni, 89. They made the journey together and posed for Kassie after casting their votes. In a preliminary assessment released a day after the vote, the Zimbabwe Election Support Network said that the count at polling stations was going smoothly. But it reported that some voters had been turned away at 6% of polling stations nationwide, and at 19% in Harare, an opposition stronghold. Still, the voting was free of the widespread rigging and violence that marred previous elections under #Mugabe, who was ousted in November after more than 37 years in power. Election officials said that results of the contest would be announced by Saturday, or within 5 days of the vote, as required by law.
