Spectators in Australia, Africa, Asia, Europe and South America recently got to witness the longest lunar eclipse of this century - lasting 1 hour 42 minutes 57 seconds.

The clear skies allowed us to watch the moon turn blood red.
This beautiful phenomenon is due to Rayleigh scattering - As the light passes through the Earth’s atmosphere, shorter wavelengths of light scatter, with the longer red coloured light waves reaching the moon. The condition of the Earth's atmosphere can affect the shade of red the Moon takes on during the eclipse.
