August is #NationalPicnicMonth! This 1880s basket kept food insulated for picnics or summer trips.
Hare’s Patent Refrigerator Baskets were advertised as being “in fact, MINIATURE REFRIGERATORS, with Ice-Box all complete.” The basket was lined with tin, surrounded by felt, and had an air-tight lid so perishable items like fish or butter could be stored safely.
In cold weather, the icebox could be removed and you could use the basket to keep a hot meal warm.
The basket was shown in the 1881 Conroy, Bissett & Malleson trade catalog, "Illustrated Retail Price List, and Hand-Book for Sportsmen," in our @silibraries.
