People are fleeing Nicaragua in droves. A violent political crisis has ruined the economy and challenged President Daniel Ortega’s hold on power. It started in mid-April, when the government announced changes to the social security program. Demonstrators clashed with security forces and barricaded roadways. Human rights advocates say that between 300 and 450 people have been killed and thousands wounded — and that most of them were shot by the police or by paramilitary forces. The photographer @daniele_volpe took this photo of squatters on undeveloped private land on the outskirts of Managua, the capital. In April, squatters began to descend on certain parcels of private land around #Nicaragua. “Our motivation is to live in tranquillity, with security,” said said Francisco, 33, an unemployed machinist living at the settlement outside Managua. “Before, we lived with security.
