The summer after her freshman year of college, Kelly Hattori found a 1966 Mustang for sale just 15 minutes from her parents' house in Raleigh, N.C. She bought it for $14,500, splitting the cost with her parents since she'd earned a scholarship.⠀

For three years she drove back and forth every weekend between @UNCWilmington and Raleigh—120 miles each way—to work on the car. Together with her father, Ms. Hattori figured out how to put in new power steering, power brakes, air conditioning and a custom upholstered center console. She also redid the wiring and rebuilt the V-8 engine.⠀

She named the Mustang Calamity Jane and took it college for her senior year, driving it for just three days before she was rear-ended.⠀

It would take another 12 months to get Jane back on the road, and to celebrate Ms. Hattori drove coast-to-coast, through 17 states. That started a yearly tradition for the 27-year-old, who now works as a geologist in Austin, Texas, and embarks on a 10,000-mile road trip every summer.⠀
