An ode to #WeirdRoadsideArt | @tynesphoto took this picture of the world’s largest prairie dog near Cactus Flat, South Dakota. This weekend, the #NYTOpinion writer @margaret.renkl argues in favor of America’s weird roadside attractions: the giant chickens, peaches and vulcans. All across the United States, on interstates the width of football fields and 2-lane blue highways, stand an uncountable number of homespun reminders that American ingenuity and wit have not yet been Walmart-ized out of existence. There’s Carhenge in Alliance, Nebraska — a replica of Stonehenge made entirely of vintage automobiles. Or Dog Bark Park Inn in Cottonwood, Idaho, a bed-and breakfast that doubles as the World’s Largest Beagle. In Plains, Georgia, you’ll find a 13-foot-tall peanut smiling with Jimmy Carter-style teeth. And you can head to Cawker City, Kansas to find the World’s Largest Ball of Twine. Virtually every road in the U.S. is the site of at least one. What’s your favorite? Tell us in the comments, or share a photo with the hashtag #weirdroadsideart.
