During her freshman year at @Stanford University, Lark Trumbly passed out on a bathroom floor from a mix of pills and alcohol. A dean told her that “students in my situation tend not to succeed at Stanford,” she said. Her housing was revoked, and she was told that if she wasn’t living on campus she couldn’t take classes. Feeling isolated and bored at home, she tried to kill herself again. Stanford didn’t know about that attempt, and she was allowed to return. But after a sexual assault, she began cutting herself and was sent home again. Ultimately, she graduated from Stanford a year late. But looking back, Lark thinks she could have stayed in school if Stanford had been more flexible. “I just wish I could have done it on my own terms,” said Lark, who was photographed here by @jasonhenry. @stanford is facing a class-action lawsuit accusing it of discriminating against students with mental health issues by coercing them to take leaves of absence. The lawsuit says that in order to return, students had to write personal statements “accepting blame” for their behavior. @stanford says it has behaved properly, but the case is an example of what universities across the U.S. are facing: How to respond to a broad array of #mentalhealth issues on campus.
