Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Kamchatka brown bear standing – Whilst it’s obviously nice to be able to produce slightly unusual or atmospheric bear images, such as the one that I posted yesterday, there is always a place for more straightforward images. As these massive bears fished in the estuary a few of them would occasionally stand to try and get a better view of the tasty fishy morsels beneath the surface of the water. They’d usually do this immediately after a failed hunt and dive and so, in doing this they’d usually be dripping from massive head to pointy toes in water. Though I’d usually fire off a sequence of multiple frames it these moments it was only images such as this, images where the bear is looking directly at me, that I chose from each sequence. There is something about the connection, that moment of eye contact where a creature as spectacular as this is, for even the briefest moment, fixing his eyes on me. Photographically speaking there was little that I could do to improve the backdrop, other than to try and render it as out-of-focus as possible but I do think that his slightly quizzical, curious expression mitigates the frustratingly colour split backdrop. Reminder of course if nothing else that us wildlife photographers are occasionally a whiny bunch, always looking beyond the beauty and focussing our limited attention spans on whatever flaw our critical eye can discover. Must try harder, must be less of a numpty but I am if nothing else exceptionally grateful to have shared this briefest of moments with such an astonishing animal.
