For sale: 55-foot-tall lobster. Owners in a pinch. Can you help? ? Larry the Lobster is Casey Sharpe’s most prized and problematic possession. The crowds he imagined 11 years ago when he bought Larry, known as The Big Lobster, never materialized. Now, a tempting offer has arrived that would cut Casey’s losses and take Larry off his hands. The catch? If Larry leaves, neighbors won’t be happy. “My name will be mud,” Casey said. “I might have to move towns.” Larry is one of Australia’s “Big Things,” the very literal name for the oversize objects sprinkled across the country. Some are tributes to a local industry (the Big Banana). Others are tributes to national passions (the Big Beer Can). Most are deeply entwined with the identity of a community. For 39 years, Larry has sat the entrance of Kingston Southeast, where tourism thrives in the summer. The thought of Kingston without Larry is unthinkable. “I think there’d be a revolution,” said Jeff Pinkerton, a local butcher. Big Things come, apparently, with big feelings.
