“Coastal brown bears are the largest of the grizzly family. Living in coastal areas provides these bears with easy access to a protein rich diet of salmon, crustaceans, clams and mussels. The coastal brown bears distinct hump behind the head and between its shoulder blades is developed from digging in coastal areas for food during low tides. This image was captured on a June afternoon in Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska, at the base of Gloomy Knob, a steep, rugged thirteen hundred foot granite face known for its abundance of mountain goats. However, on this day it was this beautiful coastal brown bear, enjoying an afternoon buffet of mussels that stole the show. Even the mountain goats, standing watch on the cliffs above seemed as surprised and puzzled at the bears presence as we were.
