Striking patterns are seen in the Malaspina Glacier in southeastern Alaska, the largest piedmont glacier in the world. Piedmont glaciers are valley glaciers which have spilled out onto relatively flat plains, seen here where ice folds on top of itself to creates squiggly patterns at the edge of the glacier as different branches carry ice and sediments at different speeds.
Operation IceBridge, the largest airborne survey to map Earth’s polar ice, captures unprecedented three-dimensional views of Arctic and Antarctic ice sheets, ice shelves and sea ice. Many of the photographs from our lengthy missions feature the icy landscapes of Greenland and Antarctica, but the view during our shorter missions reveal some equally majestic landscapes, like this image from Alaska. Data collected during Operation IceBridge will help scientists better understand processes that connect the polar regions with the global climate system.
