Cutting away with our partner @aweisblum1 on @the_oa part II . Normally would say it’s a bummer to spend the weekend indoors at work but we always learn so much from Andy. Andy has been our friend and collaborator since we worked on #TheEast together. Filmmaking is such an intensely collaborative process — and I have learned more about filmmaking from Andy than from anyone in this work. Time in the writers’ room and certainly on set moves so fast that it’s hard to analyze story properly. In the edit, time slows down. Here, with Andy, we can study moment for moment, beat for beat, why a scene is successful in translating every shift in emotion to the viewer. Or, we can identify a beat where we fail to communicate properly — in writing, in shooting, in performance — the correct feeling to hold the audience’s understanding or empathy. This is the most frustrating but also the most fun. This is where we become better storytellers — when we have to get creative to solve a missing beat so the story can connect. I adore Andy as a human being and as an artist devoted to story. I love learning from him and with him. I also love seeing Zal so happy to get in the zone with his friend and one of his most trusted collaborators. I tried to sneak you all a peak at the scene we are working on together but @z_al says: it’s not ready just yet!!!
