204 years ago, British warships fired on Baltimore's Ft. McHenry in the War of 1812. About 25 hours later, the U.S. "flag was still there," a line you probably remember from the national anthem, which was inspired by the sight. Well the actual flag that flew above the fort is on display here every single day—except December 25 when the museum is closed. 🇺🇸 It's old, delicate, sensitive to light, and lives in a special chamber where we keep humidity, temperature, and oxygen levels just right. And occasionally we go inside the chamber to check on it, as we did back in 2014. Wearing "bunny suits" to protect the flag from mold, dirt, skin cells, and other things we don't want to introduce, staff members checked the fibers of the flag, determining it continues to be in good shape. 🇺🇸 Learn more about about our conservation of the flag on our blog (s.si.edu/flagcheckup, link in profile) or come visit in person. For our friends in Maryland, we wish you a safe Defenders' Day Weekend. 🇺🇸 #RedWhiteAndBlue #AmericanHistory #USflag #USA #DefendersDay #MarylandHistory #MDhistory #Baltimore #CharmCity #StarSpangledBanner
