The Great Barrier Reef covers an area of 350,000 square kilometers, it’s full of life and the largest living structure on the planet. The #GBR is made up of 2900 reefs and 1600 species of fish, 390 kinds of coral. It’s visible from space!
We can also see China’s smog from space... From what I’m learning the #GBR is metaphorically similar to the ‘canary in the cage’ in regards to reacting early to the effects of climate change. It is offering us a loud warning call.
The #GBR is alive and sensitively reactive to the unhealthy impacts of global warming. So much so, that sadly a third of the reef has already died.
The Great Barrier Reef is actually a real money maker, injecting 6,4 billion into the Australian economy a year (more than 12 Sydney opera houses), and supporting 69,000 jobs! Can this convince us to be stewards?
Giving us so much... what are we giving back?
