Photo by @jodymacdonaldphoto // A young Bajau sea gypsy boy waits for his father to come up for air while spearfishing below the surface. The Bajau Laut sea gypsies of the Celebes Sea are some of the last sea-faring gypsies on the planet and are a fascinating people. They are known for their extraordinary biological adaptations of being able to see underwater and for developing larger spleens, similar to those found in marine mammals that help them dive at greater depths. In recent years, their traditional ways of life have been under threat as local governments have imposed some hard cultural reforms on the Bajau. Primarily pressuring them to create permanent settlements on land. While some have succumbed to the pressures, others are still fighting to preserve their traditional nomadic lifestyles. #Followme @jodymacdonaldphoto to see more travel images from around the world. @natgeocreative #nomads #seagypsies
