Photo by @michaelmelford | Just back from Svalbard an archipelago halfway between Norway and the North Pole. Looking for polar bears we had to sail north from there, way north, to find ice where the polar bears try to make a living. Just 530 miles from the north pole we found ice and this beautiful female bear. We saw three other bears that all seem to be doing well eating the seals that are eating the cod that are eating the smaller invertebrates that are along the edge of the ice. Way too far to swim back to land, they will move south along the ice edge as it too grows south with the shorter days and lower temperatures. The two bears we saw back on land in Svalbard were not doing well as there is very little for them to eat there until the ice returns. #polarbear #ice #svalbard #nature #climatechange #norway
