Photo by @anandavarma | This is an inch long fragment of a carnivorous aquatic plant called a bladderwort (Utricularia gibba). Those bulbous structures are the “bladders” that the plant uses to trap tiny aquatic invertebrates. The plant evolved this strategy in order to survive in nutrient poor water. Look for the pairs of tiny hairs that look like whiskers on the bladders. These act as triggers which cause the bladders to suction up whatever critter passes by.

I took this photo while on expedition with the @intotheokavango team on their annual survey of the Okavango Delta. We’ll be in the field until October 2nd and you can follow along our adventures on their feed or mine.
