Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety - Fulmar with the afterburners on – There are times when, even in the best light, it can be difficult to translate what I am seeing into a relatable image. This morning was one such morning when I was alone at dawn, at about 3.30am, at Sumburgh Head on the southern tip of the Shetland Islands. With the puffins nowhere to be seen the fulmars were wheeling and diving all around, their repeatable and predictable flight patterns made capturing images of them in flight quite straightforward. There was however just one problem, that is that the resulting images just left me cold. It seemed that there was just nothing to them, they were boring and the sort of image that I’d never end up processing. However, their repeatable behaviour made my decision easy and that was to start shooting them using a slower shutter speed. This then would allow me to pan with the birds as they flew past, introducing a sense of motion and hopefully some interest. Of course the hit rate for such images can be painfully low but that doesn’t matter if the few images that do work stop me in my tracks. This was one such image, if only because the fulmar almost seems to be leaving a trail of light, like a jet fighter with the afterburners on. The was created both by the motion of the bird but also the backlighting, itself accentuated as the fulmar passed against some distant rocks in shadow. Of course such images can be enormously polarizing, usually because they are unusual and so rarely seen but I’ve always really liked this image, not least because it was such a beautifully quiet and peaceful morning. It is worth noting however that this is a hefty crop from the original image, more than I’d usually do but I wanted you to see the bird, and the effect a little closer so that you can see what is possible with a little bit of endeavour and of course a lot of luck.
