On the night of 24 May 1906, almost at the end of her passage from Japan, the French flagged barque, ‘Vincennes’, ran stern first onto #ManlyBeach. In heavy seas and driving rain the captain of the ‘Vincennes’ possibly mistook a red light on Manly shore for the Sydney Harbour entrance. No one was injured in the incident and over the ensuing days the ship’s predicament became something of a tourist attraction. In fact so large were the crowds that extra ferries were put on from Circular Quay. Damage to the vessel was slight and at high tide on the 2nd of June tugs pulled her off the beach.
