My only take from this experience: a rival rap crew from Philly (well back in 96....today we cool!) thought we were taking subliminal jabs at them with this cover because this looked like one of their members (@scratch215)—-Like took it mad personal like show up at our homecoming show all “rude interruption from the audience” (™️ #Trugoy) @rahzelthelegend just joined us officially so it looked like we were mirroring their move by having a virtuoso beatboxer similar to their group. I’m all for the battle element in hip hop but it’s like damn all in front of our hometown and family—-it was just rude. Next day I’m all thinking about some 96 level getback—-my manager was all “chill, I got this” I’m like “word WHO WE ABOUT TO CALL LETS GET IT ON!!—-he said we stealing Scratch from that group ?. I was like “huh?” He said when Scratch was beatboxing WITH Rahzel it took it to the next level...shiiit if they try to beat——box you....tell em “join us!” This was low key the weirdest coup move/rap beef if ever. Meanwhile photographer #BPlus (@bpleasel) just wanted to pay homage to @esquire’s iconic Velvet Underground cover as homage. Meanwhile we gained a new member. #ourfirstcover. #Repost @jazzbeezy ・・・ 22 years ago I wrote my first cover story for a major rap mag. This meant everything to me. It was also when I first got to hang with @questlove. After the first day I spent with the group, Ahmir and I stayed up late on his south Philly stoop and ate cheesesteaks AND AND AND he also played me like 4 or 5 hours of music from his jam session with D’Angelo. Cot damn. // Also Dream Hampton was my editor on this story; she knocked me off my high horse thinking that there could be any guardians of “Real” Hip-Hop - let alone me. It was humbling, educational, and changed my perspective on everything, for the better. Shoutout to Dream.
