This weeks #RolemodelMonday is Gabriella Bernard, an aspiring ‘Caribbean's Next Top Model’ contestant who was forced to relax her curls during the show's makeover segment after pleading with a hairdresser not to chemically process her curly tresses. She had spent the last three years growing her hair because, "her brand is all about embracing her natural beauty." She explained to the judges that, "we live in a world where the media tells us that we have to have straight hair to be accepted." Despite her requests, she was given the ultimatum to either put chemicals in her hair to relax them, or be forced to leave the show. After weighing her options, Gabriella finally gave in, and ended up placing third in the competition. She turned her experience into a 20 minute documentary called Black Hair, which was shown at the 2018 Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival. She turned an unfortunate situation into a learning lesson for embracing your natural beauty, regardless of societal norms. Embrace those curls girl!
