Mountain hare rolling - Mountain hare rolling in the snow – This image might look like this hare is fast asleep, basking in the warm glow of the winter sun but she is in fact rolling in the snow, drying herself after a brief snow flurry. She does look super contented though, and so soft and cosy! No wonder then that I so adore time spent in the mountains with these remarkable creatures, there are so few words that can do either their hardiness or their character true justice. Though there are so many species that I have been privileged to work with over the years if I had to choose a favourite then it would have to be these, this picture alone will hopefully tell you why. Photographically it was quite challenging aspect of behaviour to capture, not only because it is rarely seen at close quarters but also because of the unpredictable and slightly frantic way that they go about it. It’s not so much of a roll and a furious wriggle with legs kicking here, there and everywhere, the head only visible for brief split seconds at a time. I do love the soft feeling of this image though, and the apparent contentedness of the hare’s expression, even if it is slightly deceptive and I’m already looking forward to returning to Scotland for 5 weeks in February-March 2019.
