Thailand Beach Clean ? Brace yourself, it is time to drop some facts. Since the industrialisation of plastic in the 1950s we have produced a total of 8.3 billion tonnes of the stuff, all made using valuable resources such as oil and water. By 2015 9% of this has been recycled, 12% incinerated and 79% is in landfills or the wider environment. We are dumping anything from 8-14 million tonnes of plastic into the ocean every year, depending on which study you read. That’s a truckload every minute. Every minute of every day 1 million plastic bottles are used. In the last decade we have produced more plastic than we did the whole of the past century. By 2050, if not earlier, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish ? Phew, that’s a lot to take in ? Luckily, we can all fight this. Beach cleans are an amazing place to start, removing plastic from the natural environment lessens the chance of wildlife consuming it and dying as a result. However, clean beaches start at home. Recycling and cleaning up is the last resort, reducing is the key. We can’t just keep mopping up the puddles, we have to turn off the tap. Simple #sustainableswaps which reduce plastic consumption such as reusable water bottles, coffee cups and cutlery are a great place to start.
