This year's winners of Nikon's 2018 Small World Photomicrography Competition included portraits of spider embryos, insects and a human tear. Can you tell what each image is without reading the descriptions below? ⠀

1) A portrait of Sternochetus mangiferae, a mango seed weevil. The image was taken by Pia Scanlon of the Government of Western Australia's Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.
2) A fern sorus, which produces and contains spores. These are usually on the underside of a fern frond. The photo was taken by Rogelio Moreno using ultraviolet light.⠀
3) The eye of a Metapocyrtus subquadrulifer beetle, magnified 20 times. The photo, taken by photographer Yousef Al Habshi, placed first in the competition.⠀ ⠀
4) Crystals of amino acids, magnified four times in an image taken by Justin Zoll, are the building blocks of proteins.⠀
