The opioid epidemic which is ravaging the country at the moment is killing people in record numbers . Ohio, which is a state that has been worst affected by poverty and drug epidemics in recent years has been hit particularly hard. The “war on drugs” tactic which has been employed by the state does nothing to address or solve this terrible problem except to criminalize those most vulnerable (disproportionately targeting poor and working class white folx and people of colour). The Neighborhood Safety and Drug Treatment Amendment (Issue 1) aims to reduce the number of people in state prison for low-level, nonviolent crimes and put the money to better use by directing future savings to drug treatment and victim services. . “We know the solutions and it is not incarceration, it is care, we need to implement systems of care for everyone” . This amendment will stop the criminalization of drug use by changing low level nonviolent drug possession from felonies to misdemeanors diverting people from the monumental psychological and socially stigmatizing damage of a prison sentence. It stops the parole to prison pipeline by authorizing earned time credit incentives to people in prison to rehabilitate themselves to reduce repeat offending. All the tens of millions of dollars estimated to be generated using this programme will be directed to local drug treatment programs and help people recover from all the traumas associated with drug use. . This issue is not Ohio specific. The “war on drugs” tactic has been employed across the country for many years and is detrimental to the health of our society specifically poor working class white folx and people of color . TO HELP.
