‘ABLE’ ? A new photostory by Daniel Jack Lyons @danieljacklyons styled by Marissa Adele @marissaadele ? About the project - ‘People with developmental disabilities constitute a larger percentage of the population than the American public is often comfortable admitting. According to the CDC, that number has grown to nearly 7% of youth and adolescents aged 3-17, almost 1 in 14. And because the larger society is still unsure of how to explore their experiences, how to define their place within it, most media that bring members of this community into focus cast them as either heroic or pitiable. Instead, this story seeks to elevate their everyday experience. It is a collaboration with a group of New York City residents receiving services from Mercy Home in Brooklyn, who were styled and shot on site. Seemingly counterintuitive, participants described putting on designer clothes that few other people ever get to wear, and the act of sitting for a photo as a catalyst that allowed them to feel ‘normal’. In the end they felt, and were indeed, seen.’ #DanielJackLyons
